16/10/2017
Congratulations to Greece’s leading pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi who was named European Female Athlete of the Year by European Athletics. Stefanidi won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with a jump of 4.85 metres and is currently the European and World champion in her field.

Stefanidi took to her social media pages and said:
“What an unbelievable honor to be named European Female Athlete of the Year! Thank you @europeanathletics ! Congratulations to all of tonight’s award winners and to all the other nominees that deserved these awards just as much. I’m particularly happy to be the first Greek athlete to win this award. I believe this is very important for my country and for the young Greek athletes as it shows them that with determination, hard work and good decision making you can achieve anything and be recognized at the highest level. Thank you everyone who voted for me as well as those who did not as, regardless of the result, this kind of votes and awards are very important in promoting the sport throughout the world. This gives me and my coach @mitchkrier motivation to work harder for 2018.”
