Holiday group TUI expects the highest level of demand for Greece on record this year, its director of Communications Aage Duenhaupt told Athens news agency on Sunday.
TUI is expected to bring around 3 million holidaymakers to Greece in total. This number is much higher than the 2.8 million visitors that travelled to Greece before the pandemic.
Greek officials have said they expect the sector to bring in 80 per cent of the record 18 billion euros ($18.33 billion) of revenues generated in 2019, before the pandemic, on the basis of 33 million arrivals, compared with the 14 million visitors from abroad last year.
In the words of Duenhaupt “Greece is again this summer one of the most popular holiday destinations. We expect the highest level of demand ever”.
More specifically Crete has shown a particularly high demand and is heading for an unprecedented record in the following months. Duenhaupt states ‘’there is no tourism sector or destination to Greece that is not in demand at the moment’’ and says the top 10 destinations for TUI customers are:
1. Crete, 2. Rhodes, 3. Kos, 4. Corfu, 5. Peloponnese, 6. Macedonia, 7. Santorini, 8. Zakynthos, 9. Karpathos, 10. Mykonos.
Duenhaupt also points out that TUI's decision to postpone the start of the tourist season for Greece earlier this year "proved to be right" and adds that "bookings for the months of September and October have also been increasing significantly for several weeks’, meaning that the holiday season and traffic of travellers will extend until mid-Autumn.
Tourism accounts for about 20 per cent of Greece’s gross domestic product and has a crucial role in helping the economy to emerge from a decade-long debt crisis followed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The demand will also support TUI (TUIGn.DE) as it expects to become profitable again in 2022 lifted restrictions on movement in most European countries.
